Sui Garden was the residence of Yuan Mei, a famous poet in QING. He named it after tricking the character of pronunciation "Sui" inherited from its previous owner, Sui He De. This "Sui" suggests Yuan Mei's wish for "casual (Sui Yi), carefree (Sui Xin), and detached(Sui Yuan) feeling when residing here. Today it no longer exists, but businesses nearby still apply this name on their name card.
曹家原来收到康熙恩宠在江宁织造府任职，雍正年间失宠没落，不仅官权而且拥有的园林田地都被朝廷收管了。接手的人叫隋赫德，在江宁织造府任职时，把曹家旧园林改名为“隋园”。清代（1784）袁枚在清凉山余脉小仓山1购得这部分园林，并取名“随园”作为住所。著名的随园食单就和这里有不解的渊源。太平天国时被夷为平地后，因为地理位置还是比较偏，被农民农耕用了。1923金陵女子大学在这里落脚，也就是今天的南京大学。
