Six Dynasties Museum displayed the culture of the six dynasties when Nanjing was the capital. They are Dong WU, Dong JIN, Liu SONG, Nan QI, Nan LIANG, (Nan)CHEN. During these six dynasties, Nanjing had been a city of over one million people. It was praised as the center of civilization along with Antient Rome. The museum itself was built on the site of the old Palace of the Six Dynasties ("Jiankang Gong").

六朝博物馆建在六朝的建康城之上，由贝聿铭之子贝建中的团队设计。如其名，六朝博物馆说的是六朝（东吴、东晋、刘宋、南齐、南梁、陈）的文化。这一段时期，南京据说是世界上第一个人口超过百万的城市，与古罗马城并称位世界古典文明中心。
