The ocean/river culture (transportation ; commerce; military training, etc. all were associated with water courses) of Nanjing since the Six Dynasties had created many opportunities for the ship manufacturing business much later. MING was the dynasty that picked it up and established the Royal Boat factory. It designed and produced ships for MING's foreign affair and military defense practices. Since 1403, MING government sent Zheng He as its ambassador to visit over 30 countries in 30 years. Now Zheng He Boat Factory remain is a park and a plaza to display the history and the boat models.

    六朝建都时形成的海洋文化给造船业的发达提供了契机。龙江宝船厂建于明朝,位于定淮门外,是南京河西地区最早且规模最大的皇家建设,且配有管理规范、分工明确的工匠队伍。木帆船行业规模居说在十六世纪前是世界领先水平。

     明朝时期地势开阔,水深流缓,非常适合建造、实验、储备船只。朱元璋想要积极外交和军事北征,但是当时海运能力不足以支持远海交通或是海军建设。有了宝船厂,1403年起,明朝得以开展“宣德化以柔远人”的策略,积极派使者出访邻国。永乐年间,郑和驾着宝船厂的船,将近三十年间,七下西洋,十万余里,出访三十多个国家。的船,将近三十年间,七下西洋,十万余里,出访三十多个国家。

现在龙江宝船厂是国家重点文物保护单位,管理宝船厂遗址公园、郑和国际广场。
