Besides Mazu Palace which MING emperor Zhu Di created to wish Zheng He good luck for his odyssey, Zhu Di also rewarded Zheng He with this temple.
Jinghai means in English " The ocean stays peaceful and the world remains in peace forever". Ironically, this place was a place to make "peace" after the 1st Opium War(1842) which ended up with the unequal action items on "the Agreement of Nanjing". In 1937, the temple only had a few rooms left due to the warfare with Japan. One year before Hong Kong returned to china (1996), many people celebrate the event in front of Jinghai Temple. Jinghai witnessed the modernization progress of Nanjing through these events, and became the place where people would remember to continue their conversation about equal rights and national security issues.
和天妃宫一样，也和郑和下西洋有关。静海寺是明成祖朱棣为了褒奖郑和并供奉郑和带回的异域宝物而建的皇家佛教寺院。静海之意，就是“四海平静，天下太平”的意思。郑和航海归来留守南京，据说曾住在静海寺。1842年是鸦片战争后《南京条约》的议会处，自此静海寺成为南京近代史开端的象征场所。1937年日军侵华时被毁，仅余数间。1996年是香港回归一年前，各界人士在静海寺举办纪念活动，甚至在寺门口竖起中国恢复对香港主权的倒计时牌。同年，政府投资修缮静海寺并对外开放。
